‘BODY OF WORK’

Even when they use ‘lenient’ methods involving confinement or correction, it is always the body that is at issue.

BODY OF WORK is an artist book by Tom Craft exploring how photography might be reconfigured through new-materialist and agential-realist thought.

Bringing critical writing into relation with an expanded studio practice, the book approaches photographs not as fixed representations, but as material events produced between bodies, objects, technologies, histories and spaces.

Through critical writing and artistic praxis, BODY OF WORK considers how photographic subjects are measured, assembled and continually remade. As such, the series of essays ask what becomes possible when the less violent image ecologies are enabled.

“In an age of facial recognition, algorithmic surveillance and unprecedented image saturation, this book asks how photography shapes what we see, as well as who is seen, classified and controlled. Moving from colonial archives to contemporary systems of digital monitoring, it reveals how the camera continues to reproduce unequal ideas about truth, identity and power. Through experimental writing and image-making, the book imagines a more responsible photographic future. One that resists surveillance, embraces complexity and works toward less-violent ways of seeing.”
